You passed. The licence arrives in the FCC database within a few days and then you may transmit. This page is about what to buy, and more usefully, what not to spend money on yet.
The cheapest real improvement in the hobby
Replace the antenna that came with the radio. The short rubber whip supplied with an inexpensive handheld is a compromise made to fit the box, and it is genuinely poor. A decent aftermarket whip costs about twenty dollars and improves both transmit and receive noticeably, which is more than you would gain by spending twice as much on the radio.

What to do in your first week
- Look up your call sign in the FCC database and check it is there before transmitting.
- Find local repeaters in a directory and programme the busy ones.
- Listen for several evenings. Learn which repeaters have traffic and when.
- Find the weekly net and check in. The control operator will invite you, which is far easier than calling into silence.

What not to buy yet
- An expensive handheld. The cheap one plus a good antenna outperforms the expensive one with its stock whip.
- A mobile or base radio, until you know whether you use VHF enough to want one.
- An HF radio. Technician HF privileges are limited, and if HF is the goal then General is the purchase to make first, not a radio.
- A tower, a rotator or anything requiring a permit. Wire and a mast will teach you what you actually need.

How do I find someone to talk to?

When should I upgrade to General?
When HF starts to interest you, which for most people is within the first year. General opens most of the HF bands and is the step that makes the hobby global rather than local. There is no waiting period, and plenty of people take Technician and General in the same sitting.
