Amateur Radio Safety

Three hazards do nearly all the harm. The radio is not one of them.

The short answer

The dangerous parts of amateur radio are antenna work near overhead power lines, RF exposure close to a transmitting antenna, and lightning arriving down a feedline. An RF exposure evaluation is required of every amateur station by the FCC, with no exemption by power level.

Almost everything in amateur radio is safe. Three things are not, and they account for nearly every serious injury and nearly every destroyed station. This page exists because the rest of the site links to it from the footer of every page, and because the guides that cover each hazard in detail are worth reaching before the ones about making contacts.

1. Antenna work and power lines

This is the one that kills people. A wire antenna being walked out, a vertical being tipped up, a mast being extended: all of them sweep through a large volume of space, and a service drop to a house sits right in the middle of that volume more often than people expect. Aluminium is an excellent conductor and so is a wet rope.

The rule is not "be careful near lines". It is that the antenna must not be able to reach a line at any point in its travel, and must not be able to reach one if it falls in the worst direction. If it can, the plan needs to change. Add the loading case too: masts come down in wind and under ice, and where they land matters.

2. RF exposure

The FCC removed the amateur categorical exemption by power level. Every amateur station must now perform an RF exposure evaluation and keep it on record. There is no wattage below which you are automatically fine, and this applies to a handheld as much as to a kilowatt.

The evaluation is arithmetic, not paperwork theatre: power at the antenna, frequency, antenna gain, the duty cycle of your mode and the fraction of time you actually transmit produce a compliance distance for controlled and uncontrolled environments. 3. Grounding and lightning

An outdoor antenna is a wire that goes up in the air and comes into your house. Two separate jobs follow from that. Bonding ties equipment chassis together and to the electrical service ground, so there is never a voltage difference between a radio and a computer you happen to be touching at the same time. Lightning protection gives a surge a path to earth that is not through your equipment, using arrestors at a grounded entry panel.

A nearby strike does not need to hit your antenna to destroy a station. Coax disconnected and physically outside the house during storm season is cheap insurance and is what many operators do regardless of what else is installed.

What is the most dangerous part of amateur radio?

Putting up and taking down antennas, by a wide margin, and specifically contact with overhead power lines. People are killed every year raising masts, verticals and wire antennas near service drops. The radio itself is comparatively harmless. If an antenna could touch a power line at any point while being raised, lowered, or if it fell, the plan is wrong and needs changing before anything goes up.

Is an RF exposure evaluation actually required?

Yes. The FCC removed the amateur categorical exemption by power level, so every amateur station must perform an RF exposure evaluation and keep a record of it. There is no power level below which you are automatically exempt. Can RF from a ham radio actually hurt you?

At amateur power levels the mechanism is heating, not ionisation, and the risk is real but distance dependent. It concentrates near the antenna, especially on VHF and UHF where a handheld antenna sits inches from your head, and near an HF antenna at the point where it is closest to a person. Never transmit into an antenna somebody is touching, never operate with an antenna at head height where people walk, and treat a tuned circuit or open feedline as capable of an RF burn.

Do I really need a ground and lightning protection?

Grounding and lightning protection are a system, not an accessory, and they do two separate jobs. Bonding ties your equipment chassis together and to the electrical service ground so there is no voltage difference between a radio and a computer you are touching. Lightning protection gives a surge somewhere to go other than through your equipment and your house. Neither is optional on a station with an outdoor antenna, and a nearby strike does not need to be a direct hit to destroy a shack.

Is climbing a tower something I can do myself?

Not without proper equipment and training. Tower work needs a full body harness, a positioning lanyard, correct rated hardware and someone on the ground, and it is not a job to attempt from a ladder or by free climbing. Falls from height are the second big killer in this hobby after power lines. Hire a professional crew, or build a station around a mast you can raise and lower from the ground.

What should I check before every antenna project?

Where the power lines are and whether anything could reach them, including if it falls the wrong way. What the antenna will do in wind and ice, since loading is what brings masts down. Whether people or pets can get inside your RF compliance distance. Whether the feedline entry has a grounded arrestor. And whether anybody knows what you are doing outside, because working alone at height is how a small accident becomes a serious one.
