Amateur Extra License: 50 Questions and Every US Frequency

Fifty questions, thirty-seven to pass, drawn from a pool of 622. The only United States amateur exam most candidates find genuinely hard, and the best electronics education in the hobby.

The short answer

The Amateur Extra exam is 50 multiple-choice questions with 37 needed to pass, drawn from a public pool of 622. It grants exclusive segments at the bottom of the 80, 40, 20 and 15 metre bands that no other class may use, plus the right to serve as a volunteer examiner. It adds no new bands and no additional power over General, and takes most people forty to sixty hours of study.

Amateur Extra is the top of the United States licensing ladder, and it is the class whose value is most often misdescribed. It does not grant more power. It does not add a single band. What it adds is a set of narrow exclusive slices at the bottom of four HF bands and a body of technical knowledge that changes how you understand every piece of equipment you own. Whether that is worth forty to sixty hours depends entirely on which of those two things you want.

What Extra actually unlocks

The exclusive segments are small, specific and genuinely useful in one situation: working a rare station that is deliberately operating where the crowd cannot follow. An expedition to a remote island listening at 14.020 MHz is inside Extra privileges and outside General ones, which thins the pile-up by an enormous factor.

Beyond frequencies, the license grants the right to serve as a volunteer examiner for all three classes, which is how the entire United States licensing system runs. Every exam session anywhere in the country is administered by three accredited volunteers, most of them Amateur Extra holders, none of them paid. If you want to give back to the hobby in a way that costs nothing but an afternoon a month, this is the route.

What is on Element 4

Ten subelements, 50 questions, and a distribution that puts practical circuits and antennas at eight questions each. Those two blocks together are 16 of the 50, nearly a third of the exam, and they are the most technical material in the pool.

The material that actually causes failures

Complex impedance and the Smith chart. This is the block that most often ends a first attempt. Impedance has a resistive part and a reactive part, the reactive part is positive for inductance and negative for capacitance, and the Smith chart is a way of plotting all possible impedances on one circle so that a matching network becomes a path rather than an equation. You do not need to love it. You need to be able to read which quadrant a given impedance sits in and what a series inductor does to it.

Transmission line behaviour. A line of a given electrical length transforms whatever is on its far end. A quarter-wave line inverts, a half-wave line repeats, and velocity factor determines what physical length gives you the electrical length you want. The impedance matching calculator on this site does exactly the arithmetic E9 asks about, and using it while you study is more effective than reading about it.

Amplifier classes and filters. Class A through class E, efficiency versus linearity, and why a linear amplifier for single sideband cannot be run in the high-efficiency classes that a Morse code or FM amplifier can. Then filter topologies: what a Chebyshev response trades away against a Butterworth, and where each belongs.

Digital signal processing and software defined radio. Sampling rate, quantisation, Nyquist, and the direct-sampling architecture that every modern transceiver including the Icom IC-7300 is built on. This block did not exist in older pools and it is now a meaningful fraction of E7.

How to study for Element 4

The honest answer is that the method which passed your first two exams will not pass this one, and people who try it fail once and then change approach. Six hundred and twenty-two questions is too many to memorise as letters, and the questions are written specifically to defeat that: the same concept appears with different numbers so that recognising the wording does not give you the answer.

  1. Learn about a dozen formulas cold. Resonant frequency, inductive and capacitive reactance, decibels from a power ratio, Q, time constant, and the quarter-wave line length. Everything numerical in the pool falls out of these.
  2. Work problems, do not read them. Reading a worked example produces the feeling of understanding without the ability. Cover the answer and do the arithmetic.
  3. Take a calculator you have used before to the exam. A basic scientific calculator is permitted and expected; a phone is not. Practise on the same one.
  4. Study the subelements in weight order. E7 and E9 are 16 questions between them. E0 safety is one question and can be learned in five minutes.
  5. Accept that some of E6 is memorisation. Semiconductor physics and logic families do not reason out from first principles at this depth. Drill them.
  6. Sit full 50 question exams under time pressure. Three consecutive fresh sets above 85 percent before booking, same standard as the other elements, with a larger margin because there is more arithmetic to get wrong under pressure.

Study the calculators, not just the book

The station an Extra usually ends up with

An Extra class license does not require different equipment, but the people who upgrade tend to be the ones already pushing at the limits of what a wire antenna and 100 watts can do. That points at two purchases, in this order and not the other one.

Antenna first. Raising a wire, adding a rotatable beam or getting a vertical clear of the roofline changes results more than power does. Then power, if the antenna is genuinely maxed. Going from 100 watts to 600 is 7.8 decibels, a bit over one S unit at the far end. Should you upgrade?

Upgrade if you chase DX, if you want to serve as a volunteer examiner, or if you want the electronics knowledge and the exam is a convenient reason to acquire it. Those are three good reasons and they cover most people who do it.

Do not upgrade because you think it will improve your signal, because it will not. Do not upgrade before you hold General and have used it for a while, because the operating experience makes half the Extra material concrete rather than abstract. And do not upgrade instead of fixing your antenna, which is the substitution this hobby makes most often and regrets most reliably. How much harder is the Amateur Extra exam?

Substantially. It is 50 questions with 37 needed to pass, drawn from a pool of 622, and the material moves from qualitative to quantitative. You will calculate reactance, resonant frequency, decibel ratios, impedance transformations and antenna dimensions rather than recognising definitions. Forty to sixty hours is the usual figure, two to three times the General. It is the only one of the three exams most candidates describe as genuinely difficult.

What does Amateur Extra actually add over General?

Exclusive segments at the bottom of 80, 40, 20 and 15 metres, roughly 25 kHz of Morse code space and 25 to 100 kHz of phone space on each, plus the right to serve as a volunteer examiner for all three classes. It adds no new bands and no additional power. Outside those segments a General and an Extra are indistinguishable on the air.

Is the Extra license worth it if I do not chase DX?

The privileges alone are not, honestly. What is worth it is the material. The Extra pool is the best structured electronics and RF education available at the price, and passing it leaves you able to read a schematic, size a matching network, interpret a Smith chart and understand what your own transceiver is doing internally. Many people upgrade for that reason and never use an exclusive segment.

Can I take the Extra exam without holding General?

You must pass the elements in order, but you can pass them all in one sitting. Volunteer examiner teams routinely let a candidate attempt Element 2, then Element 3, then Element 4 in the same session, and a well-prepared candidate can walk in unlicensed and walk out an Amateur Extra. Passing all three at once still incurs only one FCC application fee.

What does the Extra exam cost?

An upgrade from General to Extra costs only the volunteer examiner session fee, typically about $15 and zero with some coordinators. The $35 FCC application fee applies to a new license, a renewal or a vanity call sign, not to an upgrade that keeps your existing call sign. Upgrading is therefore the cheapest transaction in amateur licensing.

Does Extra let me run more power?

No. The 1500 watt PEP legal limit applies to every license class that has privileges on a band, and a General already holds it everywhere except 60 metres, which is capped for everyone. If more power is what you want, that is an amplifier purchase and an RF exposure evaluation, not a license upgrade.
