How to Get a Ham Radio License in the United States

Three written exams, all multiple choice, all drawn from a published question pool. No Morse code, no interview, no equipment required to sit them. Here is the whole path, in order.

The short answer

A United States amateur radio license requires passing a multiple-choice written exam at a volunteer examiner session. The entry-level Technician exam is 35 questions with 26 needed to pass, costs the $35 FCC application fee plus a session fee of about $15, and takes most people ten to fifteen hours of study. There is no Morse code requirement for any class.

Amateur radio is the only radio service in the United States that lets an ordinary person build a transmitter, run 1500 watts, bounce a signal off the ionosphere and talk to a stranger on another continent, and the only thing standing between you and that is a multiple-choice test whose questions are published in advance. The barrier is smaller than almost everyone assumes from outside. What follows is the whole path, in the order you will actually walk it.

The three license classes, and what each one actually buys you

There are exactly three amateur license classes in the United States today. Older classes called Novice and Advanced still exist on paper for people who hold them, but no new ones have been issued for decades. You take them in order: Technician, then General, then Amateur Extra. Each is a separate written element, and holding the higher class includes everything the lower ones grant.

The pass mark is 74 percent in every case, which is 26 correct out of 35 on Technician and General, and 37 out of 50 on Extra. Every question on your exam is drawn verbatim from the published pool, with the same four answer options in a shuffled order. Nothing is written fresh on the day. This is unusual among licensing exams and it is the single most useful fact about preparing for one.

Technician: everything above 50 MHz

The Technician license grants all amateur privileges above 50 MHz at the full 1500 watt legal limit. In practice that means the 2 metre and 70 centimetre bands where the repeaters live, 6 metres, and every microwave allocation above them. It also grants a narrow slice of HF: Morse code on parts of 80, 40 and 15 metres, and Morse, digital and single sideband voice on part of 10 metres, all capped at 200 watts.

That HF slice matters more than its size suggests. When the solar cycle is near its peak, 10 metres opens worldwide in the afternoon and a Technician with 200 watts and a wire can work across an ocean. When it is near its bottom, the same band is dead for months. Most Technicians spend their time on the repeaters, and the Technician starter station is built around that reality.

General: most of every HF band

The General license is the upgrade that changes what the hobby is. It opens the voice segments of 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 metres at up to 1500 watts, plus 160, 60 and 30 metres. This is the license that makes worldwide contacts routine rather than seasonal, and it is why the standard advice is to sit General as soon as the Technician certificate is in your hand, or on the same afternoon if you can.

Amateur Extra: the exclusive segments

The Amateur Extra license adds the bottom slices of 80, 40, 20 and 15 metres that no other class may use. Those segments are where the rare expedition stations listen, precisely because the crowd cannot follow them there. The exam is 50 questions, far more technical than the other two, and it is the only one that most people find genuinely hard. It grants no new bands, only new segments and the right to serve as a volunteer examiner for every class.

What the exams actually test

All three question pools are built to the same shape: rules and regulations, operating practices, electrical principles, components and circuits, signals and emissions, antennas and feedlines, radio wave propagation, and safety. What changes between classes is depth, not subject matter.

  • Technician asks what a term means and what a rule says. It wants you to know that a repeater retransmits, that a dummy load absorbs power without radiating, that you identify every ten minutes and at the end of a contact.
  • General asks what happens when you change something. It wants you to know why a higher antenna works more DX, what the ionospheric layers do at night, what a tuner does and does not fix, and how single sideband differs from FM in bandwidth and efficiency.
  • Extra asks you to calculate. Reactance, resonance, decibels, Smith charts, transmission line behaviour, digital logic, and rules at a level of detail no other class touches. This is the element where studying the theory rather than memorising the answers stops being optional.

Every pool also carries a safety section, and it is not filler. RF exposure evaluation, antenna and tower safety, battery handling and station grounding all appear on all three exams. The route, step by step

  1. Choose a study method. A book that explains the theory, an app that drills the pool, or both. The study materials comparison covers what each one is good at. Most people who pass comfortably used a book for understanding and a drill app for repetition.
  2. Get an FCC Registration Number before exam day. An FRN comes free from the FCC CORES system and takes about ten minutes. You need it to sit the exam, and the volunteer examiners cannot file your paperwork without it. Doing this the night before is the most common avoidable delay.   3. Drill practice exams until you are scoring above 85 percent consistently. Not once. Three or four sessions in a row, on freshly randomised question sets. The margin matters because exam nerves cost a few points.
  4. Find a session. In-person sessions run at clubs, hamfests, libraries and fire stations. Remote video sessions run most days of the week. See how to find an exam session.

  6. Try the next element. If you passed, most teams will let you attempt General immediately at no extra cost. There is no downside to failing it.
  7. Pay the FCC fee when the email arrives, then watch for your call sign in the database. Then, and only then, transmit.

The two-exam strategy, stated plainly

Study Technician properly, then spend an extra week on General before you book the session, and attempt both. The volunteer examiner team charges one session fee for as many elements as you pass in a sitting, and the FCC application fee is charged once for the resulting license. Passing both in one afternoon can save roughly $50 and several weeks, and there is no penalty at all for attempting General and missing it.

Some volunteer examiner coordinators, notably the Laurel VEC, charge no session fee at all. GLAARG charges a reduced fee and waives it for applicants under 18. Upgrading from Technician to General or from General to Extra costs only the session fee. Which radio to buy, and when

Hearing a repeater conversation while you are learning what a repeater is makes the material stick in a way flashcards do not.

Once the call sign appears, what you buy depends entirely on which license you hold, and this is where the majority of first-purchase regret comes from. Buying an HF radio on a Technician license means owning equipment you may legally use on one narrow slice of one band. Buying a handheld on a General license means starting with the least capable radio your privileges allow.

The mistakes that cost people the most time

  • Memorising answers without the theory, then stalling at General. Pure pool drilling passes Technician reliably and then leaves nothing to build on. General asks what happens when a variable changes, which memorised answer letters cannot tell you.
  • Turning up without an FRN. Ten minutes of admin done in advance, or a wasted trip.
  • Transmitting before the call sign appears in the database. Passing the exam is not a license. The license exists when the FCC grants it, and until then you are an unlicensed operator with a certificate in your hand.
  • Buying an HF radio on a Technician license. Common, expensive, and entirely avoidable by sitting General on the same day.
  • Spending the whole budget on the radio. The antenna is the cheapest major component and the largest single influence on how well the station works. Every build on this site puts more money into the antenna system than a first-time buyer expects.
  • Assuming the license covers the antenna. It does not. Homeowner association rules, local zoning and lease terms are separate from the FCC entirely, and they are covered on antenna restrictions.

Questions people ask about this

Do I still need to learn Morse code to get a ham radio license?

No. The FCC dropped the Morse code requirement for all United States amateur licenses in 2007. Every class, including Amateur Extra, is now a written multiple-choice exam only. Morse code is still widely used on the air and is worth learning because it gets through when voice cannot, but it is entirely optional and no examiner will ever ask you to send a character.

How long does it take to get licensed?

Most people study for the Technician exam for ten to fifteen hours spread over one to three weeks, pass at a local volunteer examiner session, and have a call sign in the FCC database within one to two business days of the session being filed. The slowest part is usually waiting for a convenient exam session, and remote video sessions have largely removed even that.

What does a ham radio license cost in total?

A new license costs the $35 FCC application fee plus whatever the volunteer examiner team charges, which is typically about $15 and is zero with some coordinators. Study material can be free. Budget $50 for the whole thing, and note that the FCC fee is charged once for a new license rather than per exam element, so passing two exams in one session costs the same as passing one.

Can I take all three exams in one sitting?

Yes. Volunteer examiner sessions let you attempt the next element immediately after passing the previous one, usually at no extra charge, and it is common for well-prepared candidates to walk out having passed Technician and General on the same afternoon. You must pass each element in order. There is no way to skip Technician and sit General first.

Is my license good in the whole country?

Yes. A United States amateur license is federal and valid in every state and territory, aboard United States vessels and aircraft, and it grants reciprocal operating privileges in many other countries under CEPT and IARP agreements. There is no state-level amateur radio license and no local permit for operating, though there can be local rules about the antenna structure itself.

How long does the license last and what happens if it expires?

A United States amateur license runs for 10 years and renews without an exam. If it lapses there is a 2 year grace period during which you may renew but may not transmit. Past that the license is gone and you would have to retake the exams, though the FCC has historically had a route to reclaim a former call sign. Renewal is free of exam requirements but carries the FCC application fee.
