Technician Starter Station: A Complete First Ham Radio Setup Under $400

Everything a newly licensed Technician needs to work the local repeaters, in the order you should buy it, with a real running total.

The short answer

A complete working Technician station costs about $350: a Baofeng UV-5R at $16, a Nagoya NA-771C whip at $16, extended batteries at $23, a genuine FTDI programming cable at $22, and a Diamond X50A base antenna with mount and 50 ft of coax at about $233. The outdoor antenna is worth more than a better radio.

This is the first of four complete station builds on this site, and it is the one that matters most, because it is the one that decides whether somebody stays in the hobby. The common failure is not buying the wrong radio. It is buying a radio and nothing else, discovering that the stock antenna will not reach the repeater from indoors, and concluding that amateur radio does not work.

So this build is priced as a station, not as a radio. Every item is here because leaving it out breaks something. The total for the required items is about $350, and the largest single line in it is the outdoor antenna, not the transceiver. That ordering is deliberate and it is the most useful thing on this page.

The complete build list

Grouped by what each part does rather than by price, because the groups are how you decide what to defer. You can skip the whole car group and still have a working station. You cannot skip the programming cable and have a usable one.

Why the antenna line is bigger than the radio line

Decibels are what matter, and they add up in ways that money spent on a radio does not. Here is the actual arithmetic for this build, working from the handheld outward.

The final row is roughly a tenfold improvement in effective radiated power over the first, before counting height at all. Height is the part that does not show up in a decibel figure and matters more than any of it: at VHF, propagation is close to line of sight, so raising the antenna from 5 feet to 25 feet extends the radio horizon from about 3 miles to about 7 miles, and clears the roofline and the trees that were absorbing the signal in the first place. A better radio does none of that. A Yaesu FT-60R costs twelve times as much as the Baofeng and transmits 1 watt more, which is 1 dB. It has a genuinely better receiver, and that is worth paying for if you live near a strong transmitter site, but it does not change the fundamental fact: gain and height beat radios.

What you can safely skip

Telling you what not to buy is what makes the rest of this list credible. At this tier, all of the following are genuinely optional and several are actively a waste of money.

  • A better handheld. Not yet. Buy one after you know what annoys you about this one. The most common complaint turns out to be the menu system, which no amount of money fixes.
  • A high-gain handheld antenna longer than about 17 inches. The extra gain is real and small, and the antenna becomes awkward enough that you leave the radio at home. A radio you carry beats a radio with a better antenna that you do not.
  • An amplifier for a handheld. Cheap VHF and UHF amplifiers driven by a handheld are frequently dirty, and a handheld cannot key them cleanly. Buy a mobile radio instead when you want more power; it will be cheaper and legal.
  • A separate battery eliminator and cigarette lighter adapter. The extended USB-C batteries make both redundant.
  • Antenna analyzers, at this stage. A NanoVNA H4 vector network analyzer$89.90 is the right tool and you will want one eventually, but at 2 m and 70 cm with a commercial antenna, an in-line meter answers the only question you have.
  • A grounding system for this station. A wall-mounted vertical below the roof peak, on a non-metallic mount, is a different risk profile from a mast. Read grounding and lightning protection and decide honestly. If the antenna ends up above the roofline or on a mast, grounding stops being optional.

What to upgrade first, in order

  1. An SWR meter, about $58. Not for tuning, since the commercial antenna is already resonant, but for knowing. A crushed coax run or a water-filled connector shows up here and nowhere else. Add the Surecom SW-102 digital VHF/UHF SWR meter$57.99.
  2. A mobile radio, $116 to $450. This is the real upgrade. Twenty-five to fifty watts on the antenna you already installed is 7 to 10 dB over the handheld, and it costs less than a good handheld. See the mobile radio roundup.
  3. More height, and proper grounding to go with it. Getting the antenna another 10 feet up beats almost anything you can buy. Read the safety guide first, because this is where the hazards start.
  4. The General license, $15 to $50. The cheapest upgrade in the hobby by a wide margin, and it opens the HF bands. See General class.
  5. A 10 m capable antenna and radio. Technicians have phone privileges on 28.300 to 28.500 MHz, which is worldwide during good conditions. A Quad-band mobile antenna, 10 m / 6 m / 2 m / 70 cm$65.90 adds 10 m and 6 m to a mobile install.

The order to buy things in, if the budget comes in stages

Nobody buys a station in one transaction. The order below keeps you with something usable at every stage rather than with half of two things.

How we chose these items

We research equipment from published manufacturer specifications, FCC rules and Part 97 itself, and verified owner reviews at volume. We do not claim hands-on testing of gear we have not used, and where a figure in the tables above comes from a datasheet rather than a measurement, it says so. Antenna gain figures are the manufacturer's published numbers in dBi and should be treated as optimistic by a decibel or so, which is normal for the whole category and does not change the ranking.

Selection criteria for this tier, in order: does leaving it out break the station, is there a cheaper item that does the same job without creating a future problem, and is it still the right item a year from now. The programming cable is the clearest example. A $6 cable with a counterfeit serial chip is not cheaper than a $22 cable with a genuine one, because the failure mode is an evening lost to driver problems and a conclusion that the radio is broken.

Questions people ask about this

Is a $16 Baofeng really good enough to start with?

Yes, with the caveat that the radio is only part of the cost. A UV-5R with an upgraded antenna, a larger battery and a working programming cable runs about $77 and performs well enough to work every repeater within normal range of your location. Its weakness is receiver selectivity: near a commercial paging or broadcast site it will hear signals that are not there. If you live near a busy transmitter site, a Yaesu FT-60R is the fix.

Why does the antenna matter more than the radio?

Because antenna gain applies to both transmit and receive, while radio quality mostly affects receive. Swapping a stock rubber duck for a 15 inch whip typically gains 2 to 3 dB, and moving from any handheld antenna to an outdoor vertical on a mast gains 10 dB or more once height is included. Ten decibels is ten times the power. No amount of money spent on the radio buys that.

Do I need the base antenna, or can I just use the handheld?

You can start with the handheld alone, and many people do. But the base antenna and its coax are the largest single upgrade in this build, and they are what turn a radio you use occasionally into a station you use daily. If the budget forces a choice, buy the radio and the base antenna and defer the mobile mount, not the other way around.

What does this station let me do with a Technician license?

Everything above 50 MHz at up to 1500 watts, which covers all repeater work, local nets, simplex contacts, weather spotting, public service events, satellite contacts and digital modes on 2 m and 70 cm. On HF a Technician gets CW on parts of 80, 40 and 15 m, plus CW, digital and SSB on part of 10 m, all limited to 200 watts. A handheld does none of the HF part.

How much should I expect to spend in total?

The required items in this build come to roughly $350, which covers the radio, its accessories, an outdoor antenna with coax and mounting, and the study guide. Adding the optional speaker mic, mobile mount, orientation book and SWR meter brings it to about $470. Nothing in the build is a placeholder that needs replacing within a year, which is the point of building it in this order.

What should I upgrade first once this is working?

An SWR meter, so you can verify rather than assume. After that, a 25 to 50 watt mobile radio for the house or car, since 5 watts from a handheld is the real limit on this build and a mobile gives you five to ten times the power on the same antenna. Only then consider a better handheld, because by that point you will know exactly what annoys you about this one.
