Hustler 6-BTV Review: A Trap Vertical That Earns Its Radials

Buy the 6-BTV if you have ground to lay radials in and you want a resonant, full legal limit multiband vertical that puts a low angle signal out on 80 through 10 metres. Skip it if you cannot or will not install a radial field, because a trap vertical without radials is a worse antenna than a broadband one designed to go without them.

What it does well

  • Resonant on each band through traps rather than matched broadband, so far more of your power is radiated rather than dissipated.
  • Rated at the full legal limit, so an amplifier is not ruled out by the antenna.
  • Twenty four feet is a genuinely useful fraction of a wavelength on 40 metres, which is where many verticals fall down.
  • Low take off angle, which is what you want for distance work on 20 metres and up.

Where it falls short

  • It needs radials, and it needs a lot of them. Without a proper ground system it will disappoint, and this is the single most common installation failure.
  • Traps are lossy and narrowband. Each band has a usable segment rather than the whole band, and you tune for where you operate.
  • Assembly and tuning take real time. This is not a bolt it up and forget it antenna.
  • Twenty four feet of unguyed aluminium in a windy site needs thought. Check the wind load figure against your conditions.

The radials are the antenna

A quarter wave vertical works against a ground plane, and the return current has to flow somewhere. If it does not flow in wires you provided, it flows through lossy soil, and that loss is a direct subtraction from your radiated signal. It does not show up on an SWR meter. In fact a poor ground system often produces a flatter SWR, because the loss resistance sits right where a good match wants resistance to be.

How many radials does a Hustler 6-BTV need?

More than most people install. Owner reports correlate results with radial count so consistently that it is the first thing to plan and the last thing to skimp on. Many radials of modest length work better than a few long ones, and they can be laid on the surface or shallowly buried. Without a proper ground system the antenna will underperform in a way no tuning can fix.

They answer different constraints. The 6-BTV is resonant on each band, handles the legal limit, and requires a radial field to work properly. Does a trap vertical cover the whole band?
