Phonetic alphabet for amateur radio
Use the standard words. Improvised phonetics work in clear conditions and fail exactly when you need them.

The standard phonetic alphabet is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. It was designed so that no two words sound alike under noise, which is exactly why improvised substitutes fail.

On a noisy HF band, individual letters vanish. B, C, D, E, G, P, T and V all sound identical through a marginal signal, and so do M and N, and F and S. The standard phonetic alphabet exists because those collisions were measured and the words were chosen to eliminate them.
That is worth knowing because it explains why improvised phonetics are a bad idea. Substituting a place name for the standard word usually works when you can already be heard, and fails precisely when the alphabet was needed.

Alfa and Juliett are spelled that way deliberately in the ITU standard so that speakers of languages without the ph and final t conventions pronounce them correctly. Amateurs generally write Alpha, and nobody minds.

The number modifications exist for the same reason as the letters. Niner and fife are distinguishable under noise where nine and five are not, and zero is never spoken as oh because O is a letter in every callsign format.
When to use it
- Every time you give your callsign to a station that has not already copied it. Once they have it, plain letters are fine.
- Always on a first call, always when answering a CQ, and always when there is any noise at all.
- When somebody asks for a repeat, use the phonetics rather than saying the same letters louder.
- On repeaters and local FM, phonetics are usually unnecessary because the signal is either full quieting or absent.
- On a DX contact where English is not the other operator first language, the standard alphabet is far more likely to be understood than any place name.
- When passing any information that must be exact: a name, a location, an email address, a serial number.
Making yourself understood on a weak signal
- Slow down. Speaking at half your normal rate costs seconds and gains a great deal of intelligibility.

- Do not shout. Overdriving the microphone produces distortion that costs readability, which is the opposite of what you want.
- Use a small amount of speech processing on a weak path and none on a strong one. Heavy processing raises average power and degrades audio quality.

Do I have to use the standard phonetic alphabet?
There is no rule requiring it, and there is a strong practical reason to. The standard words were selected because they stay distinguishable when a signal is weak and noisy, which is exactly when you need them. Improvised substitutes usually work when you could already be heard and fail when the alphabet was doing real work.
Why is zero spoken as zero rather than oh?
Because O is a letter that appears in callsigns, and confusing the letter O with the digit 0 produces a wrong callsign that is then logged wrongly by both stations. The number conventions in the standard exist for the same reason as the letters: niner and fife stay distinguishable under noise where nine and five collide.
Is it Alpha or Alfa?
The ITU standard spells it Alfa and Juliett with two Ts, so that speakers of languages that do not use the ph digraph or a final t pronounce them correctly. In amateur use both spellings appear constantly and nobody objects. Pronunciation is what matters and it is identical either way.
Should I use phonetics on a repeater?
Usually not, because FM either delivers a full quieting signal or nothing, so plain letters are copied perfectly. Use them on a first contact with somebody who does not know you, when a station is at the edge of coverage, or any time somebody asks for a repeat. On HF, use them essentially always.
How do I make my signal easier to copy?
Slow down, speak across the microphone at a consistent distance, and do not shout, since overdriving produces distortion that lowers readability.
