Q signals used in amateur radio
Three letter shorthand that started in commercial radiotelegraphy and never left.
The short answer
The Q signals amateurs use most are QTH for location, QSL for acknowledgement, QRM for interference from other stations, QRN for atmospheric noise, QSY for a change of frequency, QRP for low power and QRZ for who is calling. Each is a question with a question mark after it and a statement without one.

Q signals came out of commercial and maritime radiotelegraphy, where sending three letters instead of a sentence saved real time and money. They survived into amateur radio because the same argument still applies on CW, and they leaked onto voice where the argument does not apply at all.
A handful are genuinely useful on voice: QTH, QSL, QSY and QRZ are universally understood and shorter than the alternatives. The rest are best kept for CW and digital work, where they belong.

QRM is interference from other transmissions. QRN is natural noise such as static from lightning. Confusing them sends the other operator looking for the wrong problem.

QRL is the one with a specific etiquette attached. Before calling on a frequency that sounds empty, send QRL and a question mark and listen. Somebody may be working a station you cannot hear.
Using them on voice
- QTH, QSL, QSY and QRZ are universally understood on voice and are genuinely shorter than the alternatives.
- QRM and QRN are useful on voice because they distinguish two different problems in one word.
- QRP on voice means low power operation as an activity, rather than a request to reduce power.
- Almost everything else is quicker to say in plain language on voice. "What is your name" is shorter than QRA and understood by everybody.
- Never say "QSL card" to somebody who is not already an amateur. The word acknowledgement exists.
- Do not stack them. A transmission consisting mostly of Q signals reads as an affectation rather than efficiency.

73 is a number meaning best regards and it is already plural in meaning, which is why seventy threes grates on experienced operators. The same applies to 88.

What does QTH mean?
Location. As a question, QTH followed by a question mark asks where you are; as a statement it introduces your own location. It is one of the handful of Q signals that is genuinely useful on voice as well as CW, because it is shorter than the alternatives and universally understood including by operators whose first language is not English.
What is the difference between QRM and QRN?
QRM is interference from other transmissions, meaning other stations, splatter or electrical noise from equipment. QRN is natural atmospheric noise, principally static from distant lightning. They call for different responses: QRM is often solved by moving frequency, while QRN affects the whole band and calls for a different band or a noise blanker.
Should I use Q signals on voice?
A few of them, sparingly. QTH, QSL, QSY, QRZ, QRM and QRN are all understood universally and are shorter than the plain language equivalents. Almost everything else is quicker to say in plain English on voice, and a transmission built mostly out of Q signals reads as an affectation rather than as efficiency.
Why is it wrong to say seventy threes?
Because 73 is a number from the old landline telegraph code meaning best regards, and it is already complete. Adding an s pluralises something that is not a countable noun. It is a small thing and experienced operators do notice it. The same applies to 88, which traditionally goes to a spouse rather than to everybody.
What does QRL mean and when do I send it?
It asks whether the frequency is in use. Before calling CQ on a frequency that sounds empty, send QRL with a question mark and listen for a few seconds, because a station working somebody you cannot hear will answer. On voice the equivalent is asking whether the frequency is in use, which takes the same time and does the same job.
