Is the Xiegu G90 good for a beginner?

It is one of the easier ways into HF, mostly because the wide range internal tuner removes the most common beginner failure: an antenna that will not match. Twenty watts is enough for SSB contacts on an open band. The trade is a receiver that will not keep up with an Icom or Yaesu, and support that comes from dealers and the owner community rather than from a manufacturer network.

Will the G90 tuner match a random wire?

In most cases yes, which is unusual at this price and is the main reason people buy it. It has a genuinely wide matching range rather than the narrow correction range built into most base radios. Remember that a match is not efficiency: if the tuner is working hard to load a short wire, power is being lost in the antenna system rather than radiated, and more wire higher up is still the real fix.

Xiegu G90 vs Icom IC-705: which is better?

They are different purchases. The IC-705 costs over three times as much and gives you a much better receiver, a large touchscreen, VHF and UHF all mode and an internal battery, but no antenna tuner. The G90 gives you 20 watts and a tuner that will load nearly anything. For contacts per dollar in the field the G90 wins; for the nicer instrument the IC-705 does.

Is 20 watts enough for HF?

For SSB on an open band with a reasonable antenna, yes, and it is roughly 6 dB better than 5 watts, which is about one S unit. For digital modes such as FT8 it is more than enough. What it will not do is punch through a pileup or rescue a poor antenna. Antenna height and length matter more than the difference between 20 and 100 watts in almost every real situation.

Does the G90 work for digital modes?

Yes, with a suitable interface for audio and CAT control, and it is widely used for FT8. Reduce power for continuous duty modes since the radio has limited heat sinking, and watch the internal tuner: retuning under a digital transmission is not something to do casually.
