Fibreglass Pole vs Push Up Mast (2026)

The short answer

A fibreglass pole is light, non-conductive and made for holding a wire antenna up temporarily. A metal push up mast is heavier, stiffer, and made for carrying a real antenna at a fixed site with guys. Choose fibreglass for portable wire work and metal for anything that stays up or carries weight. Whichever you choose, the fatal risk is the same: a mast that can reach a power line, standing or falling.

A fibreglass pole extends in seconds, weighs almost nothing, and does not conduct, which is a meaningful safety margin when you are raising something near overhead wires you may not have noticed. Strap it to a fence post, a picnic table or a drive-on base and you have a support for an end fed or a vertical wire.

Do not ask it to carry weight. These poles flex a great deal at the top and the thin upper sections will collapse or snap under a beam, a heavy coax run or ice. They also do not enjoy being left standing through weather, so treat them as temporary.

The antenna stays up, or it has mass. A telescoping metal mast holds a vertical or a small beam at a fixed site and can be guyed at multiple levels to survive wind. It is the correct tool where you need something rigid and repeatable rather than something you carry in a rucksack.

Guy it properly and treat raising it as a two person job. Wind load on an antenna at height is far larger than intuition suggests, and an unguyed mast will bend or come down. Above all, work out the fall radius before you raise anything: if the mast can reach a power line by falling in any direction, do not raise it there. Contact with overhead lines during antenna work is a recurring cause of fatalities in this hobby.

How far from power lines should a mast be?

Far enough that the mast cannot reach any line if it falls in any direction, plus a substantial margin, and further than that if you are guessing at the line voltage. Regulators and utilities publish minimum approach distances and they are larger than most people assume. If in any doubt, choose a different location or contact the utility.

Does a fibreglass pole need guying?

Often yes at full extension, particularly in wind or with a wire pulling on one side. Three lines at a mid point turn a wobbling pole into a stable one and cost almost nothing. Without them the thin upper sections take all the bending and eventually fail at a joint.

Can I put a beam on a push up mast?

A small one, on a mast rated for it, properly guyed, and ideally with a thrust bearing and a rotator arrangement designed for the job. Push up masts vary enormously in strength and many are intended for a light television aerial rather than an amateur beam. Read the load rating and treat it as an upper limit, not a target.

What about ice and wind loading?

Both dramatically increase the load, and ice in particular can multiply the effective weight of an antenna and its guy lines. If you live where ice forms, plan for it: heavier guys, a lower height, or a mast that can be lowered before weather arrives. An antenna installation that survives summer may not survive winter.
