The short answer
A dummy load is a resistor that absorbs your transmit power so you can test a radio without putting a signal on the air. An SWR meter measures the match between your radio and whatever is connected. Can I transmit into a dummy load for a long time?
Not at high power on a small load. The power you transmit becomes heat in the resistor, and small loads are rated for short transmissions rather than continuous duty. Check the rating and the time limit the manufacturer states, and treat a load that is too hot to touch as one that has already been pushed.
Does a dummy load radiate at all?
A small amount leaks, which is why you can sometimes hear a test transmission on a nearby receiver. That is normal and it is not a substitute for an antenna. It is also worth remembering that a test transmission is still a transmission, so it must be on a frequency you are licensed to use.
Why does my SWR change with power level?
Usually because something is arcing, or a connection is intermittent and heating under power. A match that is stable at low power and deteriorates at high power almost always indicates a fault rather than an antenna design limit, and the usual suspects are a poorly soldered connector, a corroded joint or water in the feedline.
Do I need a meter if my radio shows SWR?
