You like to experiment. The UV-K5 receives across a much wider range, including AM aircraft band, which makes it a far more entertaining scanner while you study for a licence. It also has a very active alternative firmware scene that adds spectrum display and other features.
Two cautions. Alternative firmware can change the transmit behaviour of a radio in ways that take it outside its certification, and that is a licensing problem rather than a technical curiosity, so keep transmit within what you are permitted to use. Do I need a licence to use either radio?

Is the stock antenna any good?
