PL-259 vs N Connector (2026)
The short answer
The PL-259 is not a constant impedance connector and it is not weatherproof, but it is universal on HF equipment, cheap and easy to fit. The N connector is a properly matched, weather resistant design that behaves well up to microwave frequencies. Use PL-259 on HF where its shortcomings are invisible, and use N outdoors and above about 150 MHz, where they are not.

Your equipment has SO-239 sockets, which almost all HF radios, tuners and meters do. At HF the impedance discontinuity in a UHF connector is electrically insignificant, so the practical objection disappears and you are left with a cheap, robust, easy to fit connector.
Fit it properly. Cold solder joints on the braid holes are the single most common cause of an intermittent station, and heat that melts the dielectric changes the impedance and can short the centre conductor. An N connector maintains 50 ohms through the joint, seals against weather with a gasket, and does not degrade as frequency rises. Crimp versions need the correct die for the cable, and a crimp made with pliers is a future intermittent connection. Buy the connector matched to your exact cable type, because a connector sized for RG-58 on LMR-240 will neither grip nor maintain impedance.

Is the PL-259 really that bad?
It is genuinely not a 50 ohm connector, and at UHF the mismatch is measurable. At HF it is irrelevant, which is why it remains the standard on HF equipment and will continue to. The stronger practical objection is that it offers no weather sealing, and most PL-259 failures in the field are water ingress rather than impedance.
Do I need special tools to fit connectors?
For soldered PL-259s, a decent iron with enough thermal mass and a way of holding the connector. A small iron that cannot heat the shell leads to cold joints and melted dielectric. For crimp connectors, you need the correct crimp tool and die for the cable, and there is no acceptable substitute for it.
What about BNC and SMA?
BNC is a good matched connector for lower power and test equipment, with a quick bayonet lock that suits patching. SMA is the standard on handhelds and small equipment and is fine at low power, but the connectors are small and easily damaged by side loads, which is why handheld antennas break at the base. Choose by what the equipment already has.
How should an outdoor connection be sealed?
A layer of self-amalgamating tape stretched over the joint, then an outer layer of ordinary electrical tape or a proprietary sealing wrap to protect it from sunlight. Work from the bottom up so water sheds outwards. Inspect annually, because ultraviolet light eventually destroys ordinary tape and the joint is then exposed.
